PODGORA
In the very heart of Dalmatia, on the Makarska Riviera, lies the princess of the Adriatic – Podgora, one of the most picturesque places on the Riviera. With its 2880 inhabitants, it is located 65 km south of Split and 135 km north of Dubrovnik. Podgora receives more than 2750 hours of sunshine per year, making it one of the sunniest places in the Mediterranean. With an average air temperature of more than 20°C from June to October. The beautiful clear sea boasts an annual average temperature of more than 20°C. The sea temperature in the summer ranges between 25°C and 27°C. Winters are exceptionally mild and sunny, and summers are long and warm with a refreshing maestral wind, a wind that unobtrusively brings natural refreshment from the open sea, much needed in the summer days. Other winds include the bura (north wind), which brings cold, and the jugo, a warm wind from the sea that brings moisture, and is extremely popular among fans of water sports such as sailing, surfing and kitesurfing.
Bathed in the sun at the foot of the gigantic mountain-nature park Biokovo, the 4 km long coast of Podgora and the picturesque harbor for fishing boats – the promenade along the waterfront – stretch out.
Podgora has been a famous fishing center since ancient times. As in other coastal towns, the boats in the harbor attract your attention. Podgora’s trawling fleet of about fifteen well-equipped boats is one of the largest on this part of the Dalmatian coast. To the east of Podgora continues the settlement of Čaklje with a beach and a newly built boat harbor.
On the hill above the harbor is the monument “Galebova krila” erected in 1962 in
